Laser hair removal treatments target and destroy the cells responsible for hair growth through concentrated beams of light. The pigment in the hair follicles absorbs this light, eliminating existing hair and preventing the growth of new hair.

Laser hair removal treatments are essentially painless. Different patients report different levels of discomfort, generally ranging from a slight tingling sensation to the snapping of a rubber band.

Starting six weeks before treatment, you should avoid waxing your legs or undergoing any other hair removal treatment that targets the hair at the root. That’s because the laser also targets the root, and if the root is gone, the treatment won’t be effective. You should also avoid sun exposure during this time.

You may continue to shave, and in fact, you should shave your legs 24–48 hours before your treatment to avoid irritation. If hair is above the skin, the laser will target it in addition to the hair below the skin, and this may result in some discomfort.

Because hair growth occurs in stages and laser hair removal only works on hair follicles in the growth stage, multiple treatments are needed in order to effectively treat all hair follicles. Leg hair in particular, however, usually responds well to laser hair removal because it is typically darker and thicker and therefore requires fewer treatments than hair in other areas. Many patients achieve their desired results after three treatments, but some require up to six.
